A Short Life Story of His Holiness Kyabje Chadral Sangye Dorje<\/strong> Rinpoche<\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n

The Foremost Dzogchen Master and Contemporary Mahasiddha of Tibetan Buddhism<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n

\"His<\/a><\/p>\n

A world-renowned greatly-realized contemporary foremost Dzogchen Master, now in His 104 years old, His Holiness Kyabje Chadral Sangye Dorje Rinpoche<\/strong><\/span> is a \u201csecret yogi\u201d<\/span> known for His great realizations with\u00a0strict disciplines.<\/p>\n

As a Spiritual Master of the highest caliber and a greatly-realized Mahasiddha of Tibetan Buddhism in our contemporary times, His Holiness Kyabje Chadral Rinpoche is also known as Trogyal Dorje<\/strong><\/span> (meaning the \u201cAdamantine Wrathful Victorious One<\/span>\u201d) and Buddha Vajra<\/strong><\/span>. His Holiness Kyabje Chadral Rinpoche is being considered as the peerless Exemplary Elder of Awareness-Holder in the Nyingma School of Tibetan Buddhism, and is, indeed, the Guru of gurus<\/strong><\/span>!<\/p>\n

His Holiness\u2019s Birth and Childhood Experiences<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n

His Holiness Kyabje Chadral Sangye Dorje Rinpoche<\/strong><\/span> was born on the Tenth Day of the Fifth Month (Guru Rinpoche\u2019s Birthday*<\/span>) of the Water Ox Year of the 15th Rabjung Cycle of the Tibetan calendar (that is, the year 1913 of the Western calendar<\/span>), to two pious members in the Valley Apse tribal group of Nyarong province of Kham, His father named Pema Dondrub and His mother Sonam Tso. They soon left their village and migrated to Amdo.<\/span><\/p>\n

(<\/span>*Note:<\/span> <\/strong>According to the Great Terton Guru Chowang and the tradition of Mindroling Monastery, the annual birthday anniversary of Guru Rinpoche is on the Tenth Day of the Fifth Month of the Tibetan calendar.)<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

His Holiness Kyabje Chadral Rinpoche started learning the Tibetan language, as well as the Buddhist Sutras at the age of four. Since then, His Holiness Kyabje Chadral Rinpoche had already aroused a great \u201cmind of renunciation\u201d<\/span> at an early age.<\/p>\n

\"HH<\/a><\/p>\n

By the age of fifteen, he abandoned His ties with His family, began His life-long journey to search for liberation and enlightenment, and went to many great masters to study and practice the Holy Dharma. He insisted on travelling on foot and refused to enter the residences of householders, staying and taking retreats only in those sacred places, caves, and hermitages that were blessed by Guru Rinpoche and other Spiritual Masters, or staying in His own little tent.<\/p>\n

The Transmissions of Rare and Precious Lineages to His Holiness by Great Masters<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n

At first, His Holiness Kyabje Chadral Rinpoche had gone over to the place of the Great Wisdom Dakini and Terton, Sera Khandro Dewai Dorje<\/strong><\/span> (1892-1940, an emanation of Yeshe Tsogyal<\/span>), to learn many Terma teachings and Buddhist Tantras, including the most precious and rare \u201cSpecial Lineage of Sera Khandro\u201d herself, as well as the whole and complete teachings of the \u201cDudjom Tersar Lineage\u201d of Terchen <\/strong><\/span>Traktung Dudjom<\/span> Lingpa<\/span><\/strong> via Sera Khandro and her consort Tersay Tulku<\/strong><\/span> Drim\u00e9<\/span> \u00d6ze<\/span><\/strong>r<\/span><\/strong> (Rikdzin Chenpo Pema Drodul Sang-ngak Lingpa 1881-1924, the son of Terchen Traktung Dudjom Lingpa<\/span>).<\/p>\n

\"Great<\/a><\/p>\n

\u00a0At the same time, His Holiness Kyabje Chadral Rinpoche also received all the Terma treasures of the \u201cDudjom Tersar Lineage\u201d once more from Tersay Dorje Dradul<\/strong><\/span> (1891-1959, the youngest son of Terchen Traktung Dudjom Lingpa<\/span>). In this way, His Holiness Kyabje Chadral Rinpoche is the only living Lineage Holder<\/span> (chodak<\/span>) of the very Special Lineage of the Great Wisdom Dakini Sera Khandro.<\/p>\n

\"Terchen<\/a><\/p>\n

After which, His Holiness Kyabje Chadral Rinpoche had received further instruction from the Great Wisdom Dakini Sera Khandro to go to Kathok Monastery, so as to meet His pre-destined Root Guru (Tsawai Lama<\/span>). There at Kathok Monastery, he was warmly accepted by, and thus received important teachings from, the Great Master Khenpo Ngagchung,<\/strong>\u00a0Ngawang Palsang<\/strong><\/span> (1879-1941, the double incarnations of both Vimalamitra and Longchenpa, also more commonly known as Kathok Khenchen<\/span> Ngagi Wangpo Rinpoche<\/strong><\/span>), the Principal Lineage Holder of the Khenchen Nyoshul Lungtok Tenpai Nyima.<\/p>\n

\"Khenchen<\/a><\/p>\n

From the Great Master Khenpo Ngagchung,<\/strong><\/span> Ngawang Palsang<\/strong>, His Holiness Kyabje Chadral Rinpoche had thus received all the complete \u00a0 cycles and teachings of the Kathok Monsatery, including all the important terma cycles, lineages and teachings of<\/span> <\/span>\u00a0<\/strong>Rigdzin Jats\u00f6n Nyingpo<\/span> (1585\u20131656<\/span>), of Rigdzin\u00a0Dudul Dorje<\/span> (1615-1672<\/span>), of\u00a0Terchen Rigdzin Longsal Nyingpo<\/span>\u00a0(1625-1692<\/span>), and of Longchen Nyingthig<\/span> (from Jigme Lingpa<\/span> (1729\u20131798<\/span>) all the way down to\u00a0Khenpo Ngagchung<\/strong>), among many others.<\/p>\n

\"Terchen<\/a>\"Terchen<\/a><\/p>\n

His Holiness Kyabje Chadral Rinpoche started receiving all transmissions of teachings from the preliminary practices (Ngondro<\/span>), all the way through to the highest practices on trekcho<\/span> and togal<\/span> of the Luminous Great Perfection<\/span> (Dzogchen<\/span>), and had undertaken strict long-term retreat practices on these teachings for six years and five months, with great realizations and accomplishments.<\/p>\n

\u00a0\"His<\/a>\"Kyabje<\/a><\/p>\n

His Holiness Kyabje Chadral Rinpoche had thus received all of the \u201cempowerments, oral transmissions, practical guidance, pith oral-instructions, and lineages\u201d<\/span> from the Great Master Ngagi Wangpo Rinpoche<\/strong>, who had entrusted him to spread the Holy Dharma to all suitable vessels. In this way, the most important lineages and traditions of the Luminous \u201cGreat Perfection\u201d of Nyingmapa have all been handed down to His Holiness Kyabje Chadral Rinpoche like many rivers all flowing into the one great ocean.<\/span><\/p>\n

\"His<\/a>\"Kyabje<\/a><\/p>\n

Indeed, His Holiness Kyabje Chadral Rinpoche is one of the few still living Principal Lineage Holders<\/span> who has upheld the most<\/span> complete lineage systems of the\u00a0Luminous \u201cGreat Perfection\u201d<\/span>, and is one of the last living greatly-realized master and Mahasiddha of Tibetan Buddhism in contemporary times, unexcelled by any others in this whole wide world.<\/p>\n

\"His<\/a><\/p>\n

\"HH<\/a><\/p>\n

His Holiness Kyabje Chadral Rinpoche is one of the major Lineage Holders of the\u00a0Longchen Nyingthig Lineage<\/strong><\/span>,\u00a0and in particular the lineage line that descends through Jigme Lingpa<\/span>‘s\u00a0(1729\u20131798<\/span>) heart son Jigme Gyalwai Nyugu,\u00a0via Patrul Rinpoche, Nyoshul\u00a0Lungtok Tenpe Nyima (1829\u20131901<\/span>), and then on to Khenpo Ngagchung<\/strong>, who was His Holiness Kyabje Chadral Rinpoche\u2019 most beloved Crowning Jewel (Root Guru<\/span>).<\/p>\n

\"jigme_lingpa\"<\/a><\/p>\n

Though His main lineage is the Longchen Nyingthig Lineage, His Holiness Kyabje Chadral Rinpoche is also the Principal Lineage Holder<\/strong><\/span> (Kyabchok<\/span>) and the Lord of the Mandala<\/span><\/strong> for the \u201cDudjom Tersar Lineage\u201d<\/span>. He was authorized and empowered by His Holiness Kyabje Dudjom <\/a>Jigdral Yeshe Dorje Rinpoche<\/span><\/strong> as the \u201cVajra Regent\u201d<\/strong><\/span> (Dorje Gyaltsap<\/span>) of the \u201cDudjom Tersar Lineage\u201d while they were still in Tibet. To this day, His Holiness Chadral Rinpoche has now passed on this precious terma lineage back to H.H. Dudjom Yangsi Rinpoche, Sangye Pema Zhaypa, who lives primarily in Tibet.<\/p>\n

\"HH<\/a><\/p>\n

\"His<\/a>\"The<\/a><\/p>\n

All these rare and precious Dharma lineages, include that of the Longchen Nyingthig, as well as all the major lineage systems of the \u201cmajor tertons\u201d including that of Jats\u00f6n Nyingpo, Dudul Dorje, Longsal Nyingpo, Dudjom Lingpa and Sera Khandro, among others, have all been upheld by His Holiness Kyabje Chadral Rinpoche. All in all, the Kathok Khenchen Ngagi Wangpo Rinpoche<\/strong> was being considered as the most important Crowning Jewel<\/span> (Tsawai Lama, or Root Guru<\/span>) of His Holiness Kyabje Chadral Rinpoche.<\/p>\n

\"His<\/a><\/p>\n

His Holiness\u2019 Transmissions of Teachings to Other Great Masters of His Time<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n

Furthermore, His Holiness Kyabje Chadral Rinpoche not only has received all those great Terma treasures, but instead He had most respectfully offered and transmitted these important Dharma treasures to some of the last century’s most renowned and reverend Great Masters of the different schools of Tibetan Buddhism, including His Holiness Kyabje Dudjom <\/a>Jigdral Yeshe Dorje Rinpoche<\/strong><\/span> (1904-1987<\/span>), His Holiness the 16th<\/sup> Gyalwa Karmapa Rangjung Rigpe Dorje<\/strong><\/span> (1924-1981<\/span>), and Kyabje Jamyang Khyentse Chokyi Lodro<\/span>\u00a0<\/strong>(1893-1959<\/span>), among others. In this way, they would transmit teachings to each other, and thus became each others\u2019 disciples, which became a much talked about holy story of the time.<\/p>\n

\"HH<\/a><\/p>\n

\"16th<\/a><\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a>\"Jamyang<\/a><\/p>\n

At that time, the Regent in Tibet, Gyaltsap Reting Jampal Yeshe Gyaltsen <\/strong><\/span>(1911\u20131947<\/span>), had requested the Great Master Ngagi Wangpo Rinpoche<\/strong> to transmit teachings to him. The Great Master then said to him: \u201cI have a disciple whose mind and realization is the same as mine, and His name is Sangye Dorje<\/span>. You can go and ask him to transmit the teachings to you. He is my<\/span> representative<\/span>.\u201d<\/p>\n

\"Reting<\/a><\/p>\n

\"HH<\/a><\/p>\n

In this way, the Regent Gyaltsap Reting had invited His Holiness Kyabje Chadral Rinpoche to go to Lhasa, the capital of Tibet, and received many transmissions and instructions on Dzogchen from him. Thus, His Holiness Kyabje Chadral Rinpoche became the \u201cSpiritual Master\u201d <\/strong>of the entire land of Amdo, central Tibet, and Kham<\/span>. As a result, many people from all walks of life flocked to His Holiness Kyabje Chadral Rinpoche for teachings with offerings.<\/p>\n

\"Kyabje<\/a>\"Kyabje<\/a><\/p>\n

After the transmissions of teachings, His Holiness Kyabje Chadral Rinpoche saw that the title of \u201cSpiritual Master\u201d could only be a distraction from the path. Therefore, one day he had exchanged the clothes of His beautiful brocades with a beggar\u2019s clothes, so as to avoid from being tracked down by the Regent\u2019s servants, and thus continued on with His rigorous Dharma practices by meditating and practicing in mountain caves and retreat hermitages blessed by Guru Rinpoche and other masters of the past.<\/p>\n

\"HH<\/a><\/p>\n

\"Kyabje<\/a><\/p>\n

His Holiness Kyabje Chadral Rinpoche has always lived a very simple life of Dharma practice as a hermit<\/span> for decades. His Holiness Kyabje Chadral Rinpoche had travelled all over Tibet on foot and camping, insisting to practice like a wanderer<\/span>, and thus earned Him the admiration and respect from many great Tibetan Dharma practitioners. Finally, they called Him as \u201cChadral Rinpoche\u201d<\/strong><\/span>, meaning the \u201cHoly Gem of a vagabond recluse\u201d<\/span>, or the \u201cone who has abandoned all mundane activities\u201d<\/span>, and \u201cKyabje\u201d <\/strong><\/span>is the honorific title given to a \u201cgreatly accomplished master\u201d <\/span>of the highest caliber and with the greatest respect, to be the \u201c<\/strong>Lord of Refuge and Protector\u201d<\/strong>\u00a0<\/span>for all.<\/p>\n

His Holiness\u2019 Great Bodhisattva <\/strong>Enlightened <\/strong>Activities for the Benefits of All Sentient Beings<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n

His Holiness Kyabje Chadral Rinpoche has shunned institutional and political involvement in His whole life, choosing instead to live the life of a wandering yogi<\/span> and has thus maintained a hermit<\/span> tradition all through His whole life.<\/p>\n

\"HH<\/a>\"HH<\/a><\/p>\n

To this day, despite His great age, he is still very strong and healthy both mentally and physically, and continues to move about, rarely remaining in one place for more than a few months, by\u00a0displaying His Great Bodhicitta<\/span><\/strong>\u00a0in the carrying out of His Bodhisattva activities for the benefits of all sentient beings. A lay yogi, he is also greatly concerned with maintaining strict disciplines in the contexts of the Dzogchen view, meditation and conduct<\/span>.<\/p>\n

\"HH<\/a>\"His<\/a><\/p>\n

His Holiness Kyabje Chadral Rinpoche\u2019s great wisdom, compassion and life experiences could be reflected from the wrinkles on His face. With such weather-beaten and hardworking life experiences on His Dharma practices, His Holiness Kyabje Chadral Rinpoche\u2019s \u201cworldly and supra-mundane\u201d wisdom are the best proof of His Holiness Kyabje Chadral Rinpoche\u2019s\u00a0entire lifetime of steadfast and firm Dharma practice<\/span>. Yet, most of those Great Rinpoches, Khenpos and Tulkus nowadays have already been accustomed to live in their grandeur monasteries with extreme comforts and luxuries with modern facilities. It is, indeed, a huge difference<\/span> between their lifestyles with that of His Holiness Kyabje Chadral Rinpoche!<\/p>\n

\"HH<\/a>\"His<\/a><\/p>\n

By the late 1950s, His Holiness Kyabje Chadral Rinpoche moved to Bhutan, and then to India. He restored a simple temple near Darjeeling and later started a hermitage retreat center<\/span>, where practitioners trained in the Longchen Nyingthig Lineage are required to take strict retreats of more than three years. This is the first of its kind<\/span> for any Tibetan retreat centers to be established outside of Tibet.<\/p>\n

\"HH<\/a>\"HH<\/a><\/p>\n

This is, indeed, the kind of practice tradition of the Lord Buddha and of the past Saints of the Nyingma School of Tibetan Buddhism, the motto of which states that \u201cLife relies on Dharma, Dharma relies on poverty, poverty relies on death, death relies on caves\u201d<\/span>. This has established the uniqueness of the practice style<\/span> of the Nyingma School, where pure and simple firm practice is the core, such that it could remain in a stance of simplicity and purity<\/span> in this world.<\/p>\n

\"HH<\/a>\"HH<\/a><\/p>\n

His Holiness Kyabje Chadral Rinpoche has abandoned all secular activities in His entire life, and never in any way to engage in the monastic systems, and never chasing after fame, glory, wealth, power or respect. His Holiness Kyabje Chadral Rinpoche insists at all times to practice in a way of a \u201cvagabond recluse\u201d<\/span>, and uses the way of traveling on foot to worship holy places and shrines, and practice by retreats<\/span> across Tibet, Bhutan, Nepal and India.\u00a0In the early 1960s, His Holiness Kyabje Chadral Rinpoche had gone for pilgrimages to most of the major Buddhist Holy Sites of the Lord Buddha in India.<\/p>\n

\"HH<\/a><\/p>\n

\"HH<\/a><\/p>\n

It was during His pilgrimage to the Holy Site\u00a0at Bodh Gaya<\/span>, where the Lord Buddha had attained full enlightenment,\u00a0that His Holiness Kyabje Chadral Rinpoche had made a solemn vow<\/span> in front of the Lord Buddha\u2019s Statue at the Mahabodhi Temple<\/span>, witnessed by all the Buddhas and Bodhisattvas, that He would give up meats from then on for the rest of His life, which was His Holiness’ compassionate wisdom\u00a0to act as a good example for all people not to kill animals for food<\/span>. Ever since, His Holiness Kyabje Chadral Rinpoche advocated vegetarianism, and had appealed to all Tibetan Buddhists of abstaining from eating meats.<\/p>\n

\"Lord<\/a><\/p>\n

His Holiness Kyabje Chadral Rinpoche lives the life of a \u201csecret yogi\u201d<\/strong><\/span>, and never to be moved by the \u201ceight worldly concerns\u201d. His Holiness Kyabje Chadral Rinpoche is a pure vegetarian for many years and have always kept His pure and rigorous vows and samayas<\/span>. His only focus is on the practice of the Holy Dharma and nothing else.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

There was an incident, back in 1968, when an American Trappist monk Father Thomas Merton<\/span> went to Darjeeling, India and met with His Holiness Kyabje Chadral Rinpoche concerning His spiritual experiences. After the meeting, Father Merton mentioned to Mr. Harold Talbott, who was present at their meeting, saying: \u201cThat is the greatest man I ever met. He is my teacher.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\"HH<\/a>\"HH<\/a><\/p>\n

Throughout His entire life, His Holiness Kyabje Chadral Rinpoche has spared no time and efforts on activities other than Buddhist ones. By the using of all offerings that He has received in helping all sentient beings, such as to conduct the ransom of countless<\/span> lives<\/span> by releasing them, as well as in the almsgiving of both material and spiritual assistance to all retreatants, thus His Holiness Kyabje Chadral Rinpoche has benefited countless sentient beings.<\/span> He has also established numerous Buddhist \u015bar\u012bra-st\u016bpas and retreat centers in the snowy mountainous regions of Tibet, Bhutan, Nepal and India.<\/p>\n

\"HH<\/a>\"HH<\/a>\"HH<\/a><\/p>\n

\"HH<\/a><\/p>\n

For many years, His Holiness Kyabje Chadral Rinpoche has provided food, lodging and other necessary facilities for the retreatants in His retreat centers, and thus provided a lot of help to many Dharma practitioners. With great aspirations to benefit both oneself and others, His Holiness Kyabje Chadral Rinpoche has established a great role model of \u201cGreat Wisdom, Great Compassion, Great Strength, Great Aspiration and Great Action\u201d of a Bodhisattva with Great Compassion and Bodhicitta<\/span><\/span> in this world, such that \u201ca most pure and clean spring of nectar fountain\u201d<\/span> has been created by His Holiness Kyabje Chadral Rinpoche\u2019s Enlightened Activities in this secular world of five impurities and in an Age of Degeneration!<\/p>\n

\"HH<\/a>\"HH<\/a><\/p>\n

His Holiness Kyabje Chadral Rinpoche is especially well known for His advocacy of vegetarianism, His annual fasting retreat of Nyungne practice<\/span>, as well as His annual practice of ransoming the lives of millions of living creatures<\/span> in India and Nepal. In addition to His emphasis on the union of view<\/strong> and conduct<\/strong><\/span>, His Holiness Chadral Rinpoche also stresses the practice of strict disciplines<\/span> and retreats<\/span>. His Holiness Kyabje Chadral Rinpoche has established numerous retreat centers throughout the Himalayas, including those in Pharping, Yolmo, Godavari, Darjeeling, and so on.<\/p>\n

\"CHADRAL<\/a><\/p>\n

\"HH<\/a><\/p>\n

Numerous Tibetans, Indians and Nepalese have all regarded His Holiness Kyabje Chadral Rinpoche as their own \u201cLord of Refuge and Protector\u201d <\/strong><\/span>(Kyabje<\/span>). Countless teachers and Dharma practitioners from Tibet, Bhutan, Nepal, India and other western countries tried to seek for His Holiness Kyabje Chadral Rinpoche\u2019 teachings, and thus His Holiness Kyabje Chadral Rinpoche is, indeed, the Guru of gurus<\/span><\/strong>!<\/p>\n

\"HH<\/a><\/p>\n

Within Tibetan Buddhism itself, His Holiness Kyabje Chadral Rinpoche can thus be rightly named as the Unsurpassed Maha-Guru and Mahasiddha<\/strong><\/span> with great realizations, complete accomplishments in enlightened activities and merits, in this contemporary age.\u00a0Hence, an endless stream of pilgrims has gone to pay their greatest respects and worship to, as well as to seek for blessings from, His Holiness Kyabje Chadral Rinpoche. All those who could visit with, or even be blessed by, His Holiness Kyabje Chadral Rinpoche would feel extremely happy and joyful, when considering oneself not to be wasting one\u2019s whole life after all, in having this extreme fortune and matchless happiness!<\/p>\n

Supplication and Long-Life Prayers for His Holiness Kyabje Chadral Rinpoche<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n

Empowered as\u00a0<\/strong>Regent<\/strong><\/span>\u00a0<\/span>by sublime Spiritual Masters,<\/strong><\/p>\n

Holder of their Transmissions, You impartially work for others\u2019 benefits,<\/strong><\/p>\n

Hidden yogi, perfect renunciate, <\/strong>Master of Great Perfection (Dzogchen),<\/strong><\/p>\n

Venerable <\/strong>Sangye Dorje<\/strong><\/span>, to You I pray!\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

By the compassion and power of aspirations of the\u00a0<\/strong>Guru of Uddiyana <\/strong>(Guru Padmasambhava) and His Retinue (twenty-five close disciples),<\/strong><\/p>\n

Intentionally born as You, <\/strong>Sangye Dorje<\/strong><\/span>, the Great Hero,<\/strong><\/p>\n

May Your Lotus Feet be firm for hundreds of aeons,<\/strong><\/p>\n

And may Your great waves of taming beings and of enlightened activities expand and flourish!<\/strong><\/p>\n
