{"id":78,"date":"2015-07-29T15:30:23","date_gmt":"2015-07-29T07:30:23","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/dudjominternational.org\/?page_id=78"},"modified":"2015-12-15T11:32:43","modified_gmt":"2015-12-15T03:32:43","slug":"brief-introduction","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/dudjominternational.org\/?page_id=78","title":{"rendered":"Brief Introduction"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><\/h3>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>The Development of Buddhism in Its Totality<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">During\u00a0the 2500 years after\u00a0the\u00a0Lord Buddha Shakyamuni\u2019s MahaParinirvana, the Buddhist Holy Dharma has evolved through\u00a0two main\u00a0evolutionary lines, namely: the <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>\u201cHinayana\u201d<\/strong><\/span> path (the <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">\u201cSmaller Vehicle\u201d<\/span> as represented mainly by the Theravada Traditions of Ceylon, Burma, Thailand, Cambodia, Laos, etc. in the South) of <span style=\"color: #800000;\">liberation<\/span>, and the <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>\u201cMahayana\u201d<\/strong><\/span> path (the <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">\u201cGreater Vehicle\u201d<\/span> as represented by the diverse Bodhisattva Traditions in China, Korea, Japan, Vietnam, Tibet, etc. in the North) of <span style=\"color: #ff6600;\">enlightenment<\/span>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">At the same time, the Buddhist Holy Dharma can be further classified into the <span style=\"color: #800080;\"><strong>\u201cSutrayana\u201d<\/strong><\/span> (the \u201c<span style=\"color: #339966;\">exoteric<\/span>\u201d school) and the <span style=\"color: #800080;\"><strong>\u201cTantrayana\u201d<\/strong><\/span>, or\u00a0<span style=\"color: #800080;\"><strong>\u201cSecret Mantra Vajrayana\u201d <\/strong><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">(Tib.\u00a0\u201cSang-ngag Dorje Thekpa\u201d,<strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/span><\/span>the \u201c<span style=\"color: #339966;\">esoteric<\/span>\u201d school). The former mainly composed of the\u00a0<span style=\"color: #00ccff;\">\u201cshravaka,\u00a0pratyekabuddha, bodhisattva\u201d\u00a0<\/span>vehicles. The first two vehicles are in the\u00a0category\u00a0of <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">\u201cHinayana\u201d<\/span>, while the last vehicle belongs to <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">\u201cMahayana\u201d<\/span>. In this regard, the \u201cSutrayana\u201d was mainly spread to China, Korea, Japan and other places.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The path of enlightenment, as taught by <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">\u201cMahayana\u201d<\/span>, emphasizes on one\u2019s cultivation of both compassion and wisdom, while receiving training on the three fundamental aspects of ethical discipline (<span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">vinaya<\/span>), meditative concentration (<span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">samadhi<\/span>), and penetrative insight and wisdom (<span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">prajna<\/span>) in order to realize on the true nature of reality (which is the absence of inherent existence) \u2013 <strong><span style=\"color: #808000;\">\u201cEmptiness\u201d<\/span><\/strong> (<span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">shunyata<\/span>).<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cTantrayana\u201d again further sub-divides into two parts, namely: the <span style=\"color: #ff00ff;\">\u201cThree Outer Tantras\u201d<\/span> (namely: <span style=\"color: #993300;\">\u201cKriya, Upaya, and Yoga Tantras\u201d<\/span>), and the <span style=\"color: #ff00ff;\">\u201cThree Inner Tantras\u201d<\/span> (namely: <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">\u201cMah\u0101yoga, Anuyoga, and Atiyoga\u201d<\/span>; also to be known as the <span style=\"color: #ff9900;\">\u201cFather Tantras, Mother Tantras, and Non-dual Tantras\u201d<\/span> respectively by the New Schools, and to be collectively known as the <span style=\"color: #33cccc;\">\u201cAnuttara-Yoga Tantra\u201d<\/span>).<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The \u201cThree Outer Tantras\u201d of \u201cTantrayana\u201d were first spread from India to China (<span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">during the Tang Dynasty<\/span>) and later on to Japan (<span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">as the Shingon School<\/span>); while both of the \u201cThree Outer Tantras\u201d and the \u201cThree Inner Tantras\u201d of \u201cTantrayana\u201d were all spread from India to Tibet during the eighth century.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/dudjominternational.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/Guru-Khenpo-King.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-555 aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/dudjominternational.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/Guru-Khenpo-King-213x300.jpg\" alt=\"Guru-Khenpo-King\" width=\"213\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/dudjominternational.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/Guru-Khenpo-King-213x300.jpg 213w, https:\/\/dudjominternational.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/Guru-Khenpo-King.jpg 288w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 213px) 100vw, 213px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The earlier teachings and practices of Tibetan Buddhism were brought into Tibet from India during the 8<sup>th <\/sup>century by the great Tantric Master<strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"> Guru Padmasambhava<\/span><\/strong> (<span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">more\u00a0generally known\u00a0to the Tibetans as<\/span> <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Guru Rinpoche<\/span>), and the Abbot of Nalanda <strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Khenpo Shantarakshita<\/span><\/strong>, both of whom were invited by the Tibetan King <strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Trisong Detsen<\/span><\/strong>. They further helped to build the<strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"> Samye Monastery<\/span><\/strong>, in which a huge translation site was organized with the help of both Indian Panditas and Tibetan Lotsawas in translating all of the Sutras and Tantras from Sanskrit into the Tibetan language.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/dudjominternational.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/Samye.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-556\" src=\"http:\/\/dudjominternational.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/Samye-300x163.jpg\" alt=\"Samye\" width=\"300\" height=\"163\" srcset=\"https:\/\/dudjominternational.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/Samye-300x163.jpg 300w, https:\/\/dudjominternational.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/Samye.jpg 399w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><a href=\"http:\/\/dudjominternational.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/Samye-Monastery.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-557\" src=\"http:\/\/dudjominternational.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/Samye-Monastery-300x277.jpg\" alt=\"Samye Monastery\" width=\"300\" height=\"277\" srcset=\"https:\/\/dudjominternational.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/Samye-Monastery-300x277.jpg 300w, https:\/\/dudjominternational.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/Samye-Monastery.jpg 781w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">At the same time, there were some other sages, including <strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Vimalamitra<\/span><\/strong> and <strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Vairochana<\/span><\/strong> (<span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">or Vairotsana<\/span>), together with Guru Padmasambhava, who helped to spread the <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Great Perfection<\/span> (<span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">\u201cMahasandi\u201d or \u201cAtiyoga\u201d in Sanskrit; \u201cDzogpa Chenpo\u201d in Tibetan<\/span>) teachings \u2013 the pinnacle of the \u201cNine Yanas\u201d (<span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Tib. theg pa<\/span> <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">rimpa gu<\/span>) \u2013 into Tibet. All these were later came to be known as the <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>\u201cNgagyur Nyingma\u201d<\/strong> <\/span>(<span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">the \u201cAncient Translation Tradition\u201d<\/span>) school.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Besides the Nyingmapa, there are other Vajrayana schools whose teachings were brought from India to Tibet during the late\u00a010<sup>th<\/sup> \u00a0to 11<sup>th<\/sup>\u00a0Centuries, namely: <span style=\"color: #993300;\"><strong>Kadampa <\/strong><\/span>, <span style=\"color: #993300;\"><strong>Sakyapa <\/strong><\/span>, <span style=\"color: #993300;\"><strong>Kagyupa<\/strong><\/span> and finally <span style=\"color: #993300;\"><strong>Gelugpa<\/strong><\/span>.
